Just a short announcement: I am posting mission letters (some with photos) from Dave and Betty Ann Elliott at http://www.grandmasweb.com/dba11-20-17.html for those of you who are interested. For those of you who may not know, David Elliott was a roommate of mine at BYU in 1969 (AD, shortly after the discovery of the printing press...). There were 16 of us living in one house. This was before the block schedule and we had Priesthood and Sunday School in the morning and Sacrament meeting in the evening. One Sunday after the morning meetings I announced to no one in particular that I was going to climb "Y" mountain before the evening meeting. I disseminated that information so that if there were some untoward occurrence, Search and Rescue would have some clue where to look for the body :-) Dave asked if he could come with me. I wanted to say "no" because it had to be a fast trip if I was going to be home in time for the evening meeting, and I didn't want someone slowing me down. But, being the passive/aggressive person that I am, I agreed verbally while thinking to myself, "I'm going to teach this puppy a lesson." I set a fairly stiff pace as we started out and he stayed right with me. I upped the pace, then upped it again, until finally I was going flat out. Dave stayed right in my back pocket. That was a first for me, and I was impressed. Sitting atop the mountain, Dave suggested he wanted to bicycle to Tucson because 1. He was one year returned from serving there in the Southwest Indian Mission, and 2. There was this girl... He asked if I wanted to come with him. I did, and we did, and we have been friends ever since... Dave's wife, Betty Ann, is a nurse practitioner/midwife and they have been called to oversee the "Missionary Recovery Center" in Manila. This is a church facility where missionaries from any of the 20 some odd Philippine missions who are too sick to work, but not sick enough to require hospitalization can stay for a short time until they have recovered. I thought you might enjoy reading their (mainly Betty Ann's) impressions. As an aside, Dave and Betty Ann have decided to devote the remainder of their time to missionary work. As soon as they come home from this one, they plan to leave on another mission. As such, they have divested themselves of all possessions; houses, cars, electronics, books, household goods, everything! They don't even own a spoon. I don't think I could go that route... Obviously this website is a work in progress, and will be updated PRN. |
