It seems that attending funerals has become a major source of entertainment for me. I didn't plan it that way, it just happened. I have casually stacked programs from these events in a pile on my desk, and was surprised to count 17 of them. The latest was for Owen Shumway. He actually passed about 5 months ago, but due to restrictions on gatherings, his family had him cremated and waited until now to inter his ashes in the Woodruff Cemetery. His family also held a celebration of his life a his daughters' residence in Queen Creek. I managed, with some difficulty, to attend both. Waiting that long provided ample opportunity to gather photos, and his printed program was one of the nicer ones I have seen. I have reproduced it here. Memory becomes more and more slippery with age, but I think I took one of the photos on it. It has been a few years since I had seen Owen and I'm not sure I would have recognized him. I suspect he might have said the same thing about me. Owen told (and retold) the story of the wicked Oni. Sometimes you can't tell the players without a program, so let me clarify. Owen married Janet Wren, the daughter of my mothers' sister, Evelyn. Janet lived with my family for a couple of years. Her birth date predates mine by 10 days. |
