Mylinda and her three offspring made an spur-of-the-moment trip to Arizona. Jessica, Jim, and Mathew Tripp rented a van and offer travel space.

Fred Zumwalt made the arraignments, and Mylinda's youngest, Alexander Barrett Ellis was blessed in Freds' ward, 9 March 2014. I'm not sure that was the impetus for the trip, but it was at least convenient.

Barbara always enjoys spoiling grandkids, and this visit was no exception. Lauren left loaded with goodies (though I suspect a few of them may not have survived the trip home).

Carson didn't fare as well, but seemed unaware of grandmas favoritism. Grandma did supply him with her trademark--bubbles.

Alexander is a happy baby (when he is not colicky). Mylinda suggested that he has some food alergies, that he will hopefully out grow. He is also quite cute (not that I'm biased).

As a matter of fact, my favorite grandchild is the one that I've seen last...

I suspect that from Mylindas' point of view, it was a short visit sandwiched between long trips, but I enjoyed seeing them.

While they were here, Barbara suggested that I make some cookies--one of the few things I can't cook (it requires measuring and following a receipe). After a protracted discussion that threatened to push the grandkids well past the point of exasperation, we followed directions on their box, and turned a Ghirardelli brownie mix into cookies. There were those who thought the chocolate was too intense, but Carson and I agreed that they were excellent.

The day Mylinda left, Dave Elliott (a friend of mine from college) came to visit, fresh from a five-day hike. Dave's son ("Little Dave") organized a trip and drove out from Tennessee bringing 5 friends. The details of their adventures are a bit convoluted, but included several days of hiking in the back country of the Kanab Creek Wilderness Area/Grand Canyon, followed by an over-flight to inspect their wanderings. Route finding in the vertical real estate that comprises that country is a mixture of art and magic. I find that part of God's world to be beautiful and it was easy for me to fall in love with it, but I realize it will always be a one-sided affair. One miscalculation and the canyon extracts a terrible price.

Like the legiondary Don Quijote, I have not given up jousting with windmills, and have taken upon myself the task of populating the photo section of all the ward directories on the internet. While Dave was here, I cajoled him into uploading his likeness to his ward directory, and in the process of taking photos to do this, I made a horrifying discovery: Dave photographs like an old man... and he is younger than I am.

While Dave was here, we visited the Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley. It is a relic of the cold war, that cost a tremendous amount of money to build and maintain. They discontinued it in the 1980s. That doesn't seem like very long ago to me, but all the electronic controls and whatnot seem absolutely archaic. Time flys on wings of lightening...

We also hiked up Copper Creek Canyon to a side canyon that turns into a slot about 3 feet wide and 150 feet tall. With all the hiking we've done together, I had never ventured there with Dave. I think he enjoyed it, and I know my dog did. I am continuously amazed by the marvals of God's green earth...

My dog needs more exercise than he is currently getting. In an effort to correct this, I designed and fabricated a device to attach him to a bicycle, such that I could ride (while he walked/loped/ran beside me) and at the same time keep him away from cars, people, other dogs, etc.

In the beginning, it actually appeared to work quite well, and he effortlessly towed me up our driveway. I thought I had a solution, until we were cruising Webb Road and he decided to go a different direction. At that point the bike went down. After the dust had cleared, I found my aluminum bike rack (the second attachment point) broken in 6 places. Oh well, it was a good idea...

Compton is now slightly more than a year old, but still displays numerous traits associated with puppyhood. I needed to make a slight adjustment to the "dog bike rack," and left him connected to the bike for perhaps 45 seconds while I did so. In that length of time, he chewed up a quarter of my bicycle seat. They say a dog becomes an adult at about three years. Sometimes I have my doubts as to whether Compton will survive to celebrate that milestone...

Being a puppy, Compton likes to "play," and being both large and strong, he plays a little rough for most people. I often wrestle with him. Sometimes I win...

...and some times he does...

Several years ago, I encountered an English translation of the Koran. Thinking that it might behoove a person to understand the motivation of those who have chosen to become his enemies, I perused it, noting various passages. Then as an exercise, I compared them to possibly relevant passages from the King James Bible as well as Latter-day scripture I was surprised by the amount of agreement among these several ecclesiastical sources. There are, of course, some topics wherein lie profound disagreements. Also, a number of ideas promulgated by the Koran are not addressed by our Standard Works. If you have in interest in providing them, I welcome suggested additions and/or changes. The number of entries in this table (135) may seem excessive, but it is significently reduced from the first draft, that contained over 350.

P376 Exodus 21:12 He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. 13 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. 14 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

P191 John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. P341 2 Nephi 29:3 And because my words shall hiss forth-many of the Gentiles shall say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible.
If men and jinn combined to write the like of this Koran, they would surely fail to compose one like it, though they helped one another. P240, If you doubt what We have revealed to Our servant, produce one chapter comparable to this Book. P335 D&C 67:6-7 Now, seek ye out of the Book of Commandments, even the least that is among them, and appoint him that is the most wise among you; 7 Or, if there be any among you that shall make one like unto it, then ye are justified in saying that ye do not know that they are true; 8 But if ye cannot make one like unto it, ye are under condemnation if ye do not bear record that they are true.

Do men think that once they say: 'We are believers,' they will be left alone and not be tried with affliction? P196 1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christs' sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
