In trying to keep up with the newly trend of a post every Sunday (I don't know how long this will be sustainable), I have some recent photos from a temple trip. This happened yesterday, where we took some of the youth in our branch and went up to Memphis for a baptism trip. The temple layout is similar to the Snowflake one in size, although it is a different design. I didn't catch any photos of it, but in front of this sign (directly behind us) there is spinach, purple cabbage, and swiss chard planted and thriving among the various flowers. This trip consisted of 4 of our youth (two newly baptized with in the last 6 months) and 9 adults. I don't know if your remember the statistics, but during the last conference there was mention that 80% of the membership of the church was within 200 miles of a temple. Well we are part of the 20%. It was 213 miles to the temple, so we had to leave at 6:30 and returned that evening at 8:30. We ended up doing 177 baptisms, and I was the one doing all of the baptising - now my shoulder feels like it could use a little grease. The trip didn't have to be that long, but we managed to make a detour that was a payment for the bribery to get the youth to attend. |
Some of the adults actually went up the night before and then met us at the temple at the correct time and then we did the work together and then headed home. When we arrived there, were many people gathered at the front waiting for a newly married couple. I guess that no matter where in the world you are, if you show up to a temple on any given Saturday, it is about the same. |
After the temple, we headed to downtown Memphis in search of the Kooky Canock. (You can visit their website here). Our branch president (pictured here) is a big fan of the food channel (I didn't know such thing existed) and there is apparently a program entitled Man vs Food. I have been informed that this guy travels the world in search of food challenges and then tries to accomplish them. If you have ever been through Amarillo, TX, you have most likely seen the signs tempting you to stop at the Big Texan for a free 72 oz. steak. If you can eat the stake, a potato, a salad, and a roll within one hour it is yours free, if however you fail, then you owe the establishment $72.00 for the meal. Well this place is very similar. They have two burgers, one is called the Kookamunga, and the other is the King Kookamunga. The first is offered at a price tag of $21.95 and consists of 6 pounds of beef, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions, and a plate of fries. The burger weighs in at 8 pounds with the bun and all the trimmings. If you can eat the entire thing within an hour, it is yours free. |
The second burger is 8 pounds of beef and 12 pounds total. It also comes with two plates of fries, and it is a challenge for two people totaling $32.50. I don't know how many people have tried the challenges, but no one has ever made the two people challenge, and 4 people have done the 1 man burger with the fastest being 7 minutes and 15 seconds. Pictured here is the King Kookamunga. There have only been 4 people who have completed the challenge, and one of them did it on 3 different occasions. We ended up splitting this burger between 8 of us and there was still left-overs. |
The youth (of course) loved the event. They were very thrilled to experience the burger. It was enough hype to make the youth who failed to attend jealous about the event and want to go the next time. At the end of the day it was a very fun event. I didn't think that I would enjoy the hype surrounding the eating contest, and even through we didn't do it, when the burger came out it was like there was a celebrity in our midst. So if you are even in Memphis, and are extremely hungry, I know of a place that might be able to fill you up. |
