From
talking to Mia, there are 2 different families planning to camp at the
Head of the Ditch camp ground just east of Luna, NM this weekend.
With that news, it was decided (last minute) to move the campout out
once again. This time the camp site will be the West peak of Mt.
Graham. The road mostly dirt (about 1.2 hours of travel on dirt
road) before you reach the campsite. It is a bit rough, but that
is because it is not traveled by many people. Below are two
maps. The first is the tricky part: |
Obviously,
the red line is the correct road. It is accessed from highway 70
just west of the town of Pima. There is a sign designating Tripp
Canyon. This is the road. It is paved as it takes off to
the west. Follow it until you come to the first stop sign.
Turn South (Left) and head down 1200 W. The next intersection is
Farm Road. Take this west again (Right) and onto the dirt.
This road will snake around and come to a 5-way intersection (circled
on the map). The road most traveled heads off to the South (turn
slightly left) and this road will start to ascend up a hill. |
This map
is a larger scale and you can see how close it is to the town of
Pima. Also the area circled in black is a slow go. This is
just after the crazy intersection. As the road climbs on to the
top of the plateau, it is rocky and slow going. Once on top the
road gets better and will travel by 2 radio/cell/satellite dishes (some
type of communication site). Keep going. There are about
3-4 cattle guards (or auto guards for those from the east coast).
Finally you will come to a sign stating you are entering a forest and
there will be a closed gate across the road. Open it, drive
through and close it again. You will continue on this road until
you come into pine trees. Once you come into Pine trees the camp
ground is on the east side of the road (left). It is the first
flat place of any significance found after climbing up the
mountain. If anyone decides not to make the trip, please let us
know and we will try to re-arrange the food assignments. This is the same campout we went to in 2007 and again in 2012. Here are links to the 2012 trip and the 2007 trip, if that refreshes your memories. Hope to see you all there. |
